Deposition of microplastics
A ubiquitous problem, a danger of the unknown, a risk to the environment. We are talking about microplastics. In fact, the entire planet is already contaminated with these tiny particles, which can only have negative effects. The danger is that we do not yet know the exact negative consequences of these substances in the environment. How are microplastics formed, what do they cause and how do we combat them? Find out in our article, so don't hesitate to read on.
What are microplastics and how are they formed?
Microplastics, more technically micropolymers, are an almost invisible but ubiquitous threat in today's world. The fundamental problem is that plastics do not have the ability to decompose naturally, but only degrade into smaller and smaller particles. This is how microplasts are formed.
Small plastic particles of less than 5 millimetres are formed by the breakdown of plastic objects or, for example, particles of clothes made of synthetic materials. Such disintegration into smaller particles is the result of degradation of the plastic due to mechanical wear, chemical attack, light, heat, etc. In addition, microplastics are also often deliberately added to cosmetics or cleaning products and subsequently released into the environment, for example via wastewater.
Whatever the origin of microplastics, their effects are certainly not positive. We should therefore be vigilant. These microscopic particles penetrate all corners of our planet and many areas of our daily lives.
Microplastics are in the air, in the soil, in drinking water and in food. Yes, microplastics can be found in drinking water and food, and we ingest more of them than most people might think.
As microplastics become an integral part of our environment, they pose a serious threat not only to human health but also to entire ecosystems.
Microplastics make up approximately 90% of all plastic waste in the seas and oceans.
How are microplastics harming us and our planet?
Microplastics may contain toxic substances. They also have the ability to absorb other toxic substances from the environment. When they are subsequently ingested by fish or other creatures, they can enter our diet.
Large amounts of microplastics also enter our diet through water. Microplastics of very small size that have made their way into sewage are almost untraceable by sewage treatment plant filters, and so most of them re-enter our homes through water pipes. In the body of both humans and other animals, the toxic substances from microplastics can then be released and have a negative effect on the health of the individual.
We are continuously at risk of ingesting these toxic substances, which can have serious consequences for our health in the future. Microplastics are ubiquitous and can cause damage to organisms and disrupt the balance of ecosystems. Another worrying issue is that the health effects of microplastics on human and animal populations have still not been adequately studied.
Solutions and measures to reduce microplastics
Of course, the most effective solution to minimise further microplastics would be to reduce the production and consumption of plastic. If there are alternatives available to replace plastic packaging and other products, their adoption should be strongly considered in lieu of the use of plastic. This also applies to reducing the use of microplastics in consumer products, including clothing, cosmetics, etc.
Another important measure against microplastics is definitely effective waste sorting. When waste is properly sorted and recycled, plastic materials can be reused, reducing the need for new production of plastic products. Fewer plastics end up in the wild, where they degrade and find their way back into the ecosystem.
An equally important component is cleaning and maintaining the environment. Volunteers, schools and environmental advocacy organizations can do a great service to our natural environment. Many of them have been doing this for a long time and for that they deserve a lot of thanks and respect. Unfortunately, plastics do not just disappear from our lives overnight and many end up where they should not and are subject to degradation. Let's prevent this together!
Nothing will help like awareness and public education about the issue of plastic waste and its impact on the environment. Everyone can help raise awareness, either through actions that can inspire others, or by simply communicating with loved ones, family, friends, children. Educate yourself and others around you so that our descendants can also enjoy living in a world without major environmental disasters with the risk of serious damage to health and the natural environment.
Supporting research and science in this area is key to finding effective solutions to the issue of plastics and microplastics. Investing in research enables scientists and experts to gain a deeper understanding of microplastics, their formation, distribution and impacts on the environment and human health.
Lord, an environmentally responsible company
Lord is aware of this serious issue and takes environmental protection seriously. We are opposed to the policy of planned obsolescence and actively fight it with the opposite strategy of creating long-term excellent products. Our appliances will last you for ages.
Our environmentally conscious customers will appreciate not only the long life of our appliances, but also the fact that Lord's warehouse in Tusheen Spa is BREEM Outstanding certified. Less than 1% of buildings in Western countries have this designation and only about 0.1% in the Czech Republic.
Our commitment to environmental protection is also demonstrated by our innovative solution in the form of the Lord W10 washing machine with microplastic filter. This washing machine is not just an ordinary appliance, it is an effective weapon in the fight against microplastic pollution.
